As a faith-based organization, our core values here at the Broetje Family Trust revolve around life long learning, self-awareness, and unwavering support for the community and the youth of today. Recently, members from The Center for Sharing and our colleagues from the Nueva Esperanza Leadership Academy (NELA) had a chance to attend an event hosted by Motivational Speaker and author of “Answering Why,” Mark C. Perna.

Titled “Unleashing Passions, Purpose, & Performance in Younger Generations,” this event took place at the Tri-Tech Skills Center and welcomed educators, employers, and students alike. During this event, Mark shared insights into purpose-driven education, the evolving concerns of today’s youth, and their visions for the future.

Overview: The evolving workforce, education, and economic landscape demands a shift in the criteria determining what is considered ‘critical education’ today, for success among young adults. To thrive in a rapidly changing world, they must become proficient in three key areas:

  • Academic Knowledge
  • Technical Competencies
  • Professional Skills/Soft Skills

When motivated by passion, purpose-focused education transforms young people from a state of feeling stuck (‘static purpose’) to one where they actively pursue their goals (‘active purpose’). Finding a compelling reason for learning turns education into a solution.

Key Messages:

  • The new generation values respect, understanding, and connection over money and prestige.
  • Educators must impart knowledge with a sense of purpose and connection.
  • Employers must engage their workforce with passion and a sense of belonging.

Implementing this Practice in the real world: The Broetje Family Trust firmly believes in the importance of meaningful work for overall well-being. In response, we initiated an internship program spanning our three focus areas: Servant Leadership, Community Building, and Philanthropy. Our aim for this internship was to address the increasing challenges of isolation, loneliness, and depression among young adults, while also equipping them with the tools needed to thrive both in life and the workforce of the future.

Ricky Reed recently completed a three-month internship with Broetje Family Trust through The Center for Sharing’s Servant Leadership development program, marking a significant step forward in his journey. Working in a professional office setting for the first time, Ricky experienced notable growth. As he simultaneously attended school, his professional and technical competencies expanded, complementing his academic knowledge. This internship boosted his self-confidence and equipped him with new skills that will undoubtedly help him pave the way for future success.
