On Saturday, October 29, 2022, members of the community advisory committee for the Immigrant Advocacy initiative of Broetje Family Trust gathered in the Collegium Café parking lot at 7:00 a.m. We said our opening prayer for the upcoming activities, and then traveled to the city of Hermiston, Oregon where we began the Buen Vecino (‘Good Neighbor’) training, a skills-based educational opportunity that focused on how neighbors can work together to build connections and community around a common goal. The moment captured in the cover photo speaks to the joy each of the participants experienced after eight hours of briefly sharing our personal stories, participating in team learning, and listening with respect and care to participants. You can see the happiness, peace and satisfaction that we felt during our time together. We shared, learned, played, but the most important thing that I saw and heard on that precious day is everyone’s commitment to seek the common good.
The training impacted me in various ways. It was spiritual, emotional and physical nourishment. We ate breakfast and each had 5 minutes to introduce ourselves. This helped establish connections and build a safe space for interaction. I felt the enthusiasm and conviction of the women leaders, their human and moral spirit, their absolute dedication, and the conviction with which they carried out the workshop. The dynamics of the presentation were impressive. We used drawings to symbolize our childhood, adolescence, youth, and adult life. I was an eyewitness to each of the stories and the common threads that weave our lives and shape the perspective each person brings to community building. A unique and delicate work environment was created.
Those eight hours seemed like eight minutes. Now, what is interesting is how we will adapt what we learned as an advisory committee and encourage the immigrant community to participate in what is collectively developing in the Tri-Cities. Over the last year, immigrant community members across the region have gathered monthly and built a support network around their shared immigration interests and desires. Most recently, they voted on goals to further reaffirm identity, lift diverse voices, and work in unison for the wellbeing and development of community.
The unity of the community advisory committee is profound. We serve with a spirit of love, solidarity, and accompaniment. We have developed relationships of trust, respect, and fraternity. We are morally and intellectually dedicated. Our methodology is to listen to personal stories, learn, and encourage one another because each story is distinctive and significant. We have learned that fraternal and respectful accompaniment can help us learn to work for the common good. I feel that there is nothing more just and necessary in this life than putting our time, talents, and skills towards raising the spirit and self-esteem of our community of Tierra Vida and neighboring regions.
Our methodology is that of the servant leader, and that was precisely what I witnessed in action during the Buen Vecino training. My deepest respect and gratitude for the trainers, whom I see as warriors fighting day by day for peace and the common good. Although we used symbols, illustrations, and of course words, the presenters, in my view and personal opinion, are excellent communicators who lead by example. The training offered an opportunity to deepen our relationships and commitment to the vision we have for our community, a vision that takes time to cultivate. A vision where we must be intellectually and morally honest; where our words should match our actions; where the common good is much more important than personal good to draw closer to our dream, where people feel loved, understood, and above all, know that they have God-given gifts and talents and that they are capable of contributing to community. We work in a transparent glass house. We are committed to support and respect community, as well as welcome suggestions on how we can be better. That is the spirit that defines our initiative. First, servants, then leaders. There is nothing better in this world than working in an organized way with fewer words and more actions of love, faith, and hope to achieve a better world.

Una buena acción, habla más que mil Palabras
Llevando nuestros aprendizajes a casa.

El sábado 29 de octubre del presente año 2022, el equipo del comité consultivo de la iniciative de emigración de Broetje Family Trust nos reunimos en el estacionamiento del Collegium Café a las 7:00 a.m. Hicimos nuestra oración de comienzo de las próximas actividades y viajamos a la ciudad de Hermiston, Oregon donde empezamos el Taller de entrenamiento “El buen vecino.” Era una oportunidad educativa enfocada en como vecinos pueden trabajar juntos para crear conexiones y comunidad en torno a un objetivo común. El momento capturado en la fotografía de la portada habla del regocijo de cada uno de los participantes después de ocho horas de compartir nuestras historias personales brevemente, participar en equipo de aprendizajey de escuchar con respeto y atención a los participantes. Se refleja la felicidad, la paz y satisfacción que sentimos durante nuestro tiempo juntos. Compartimos, aprendimos, jugamos, y lo más importante que vi y escuché en ese precioso día es el compromiso de todos, de buscar el bien común.
El entrenamiento me impacto de diferentes maneras. Fue un alimento espiritual, emocional, y físico. Almorzamos, y cada uno tenia cinco minutos para presentamos. Esto ayudó a establecer conexiones y crear un espacio seguro para interactuar. Sentí el entusiasmo, y la convicción de las líderesas, su calidad humana y espíritu moral. Su entrega absoluta y la convicción con que llevaron a cabo su taller. La dinámica de la presentación fue impactante. Usamos dibujos para simbolizar nuestra niñez, adolescencia, juventud, y vida de adultos. Fui testigo ocular de cada una de las historias y vínculos que entrelazan nuestras vidas y moldean la perspectiva que cada persona aporta al desarrollo de comunidad. Se creo un ambiente de trabajo, único, exquisito.
Esas ocho horas, me parecieron ocho minutos. Ahora bien, lo interesante es de qué manera vamos a adaptar lo ahí aprendido como comité consultivo y animamos a la comunidad inmigrante a participar en lo que estamos colectivamente desarrollando en los Tri-Cities. Durante el último año, miembros de la comunidad de inmigrantes de la región se han reunido mensualmente y han creado una red de apoyo alrededor de sus intereses comunes y deseos sobre el tema de inmigración. Más recientemente, votaron sobre objetivos para reafirmar aún más la identidad, elevar diversas voces y trabajar al unísono por el bienestar y el desarrollo de la comunidad.
La unidad del comité consultivo de la comunidad es contundente. Servimos con un espíritu de amor, solidaridad, y acompañamiento. Hemos desarrollado relaciones de confianza, respeto y fraternidad. Estamos comprometidos moral e intelectualmente. Nuestra metodología es de escuchar las historias personales, aprender y animarnos mutuamente porque cada historia es única e importante. Hemos aprendido que el acompañamiento fraternal y respetuoso, nos puede ayudar a aprender a trabajar por el bien común. Siento que no hay nada mas justo y necesario en esta vida que poner nuestro tiempo, talentos y habilidades hacia levantar el espíritu y la autoestima de nuestra comunidad de Tierra Vida y las regiones circunvecinas.
Nuestra metodología es la del siervo líder y eso fue precisamente lo que ahí atestigüe en acción durante el entrenamiento del Buen Vecino. Mi más profundo respeto y agradecimiento por las entrenadoras, quien yo veo como guerreras que luchan día, a día, por la paz, y el bienestar común. Aunque usamos símbolos, dibujos, y por supuesto palabras, las presentadoras a mi juicio, o en mi opinión personal, son unas excelentes comunicadoras que liderean con el ejemplo. El entrenamiento ofreció una oportunidad para profundizar nuestras relaciones y compromiso con la visión que tenemos para nuestra comunidad, una visión que lleva tiempo cultivar. Una visión en la que debemos ser intelectual y moralmente honestos. Donde nuestras palabras deben cuadrar con nuestras acciones. Donde el bien común es mucho más importante que el bien personal para acercarnos más a nuestro sueño donde las personas se sienten amadas, comprendidas y, sobre todo, sepan que tienen dones y talentos que Dios les ha dado y que son capaces de contribuirlos a la comunidad. Trabajamos en una casa de cristal transparente y nos comprometimos, a apoyarnos, respetarnos, y también aceptar sugerencias sobre cómo podemos ser mejores. Eso es el espíritu que define a nuestra iniciativa. Primero siervos, después lideres. No hay nada mejor en este mundo que trabajar organizadamente con menos palabras, y más acciones de amor, fe, y esperanza para lograr un entorno (mundo mejor).
